21 Tiny Habits to Improve Your Life in 2024

Embrace Microscopic Habits for a Happier Life

We all want 2024 to be an awesome year, and it can be through simple actions. The topic of habits can sometimes feel overwhelming, with articles telling us to change our lives in a matter of seconds. However, the reality is that we only have 24 hours in a day and other tasks to attend to. That's why implementing microscopic habits can be a game-changer.

These tiny habits never take much time or steal our energy, yet they have added tremendously to the quality of life. You can pick one, pick 13, or even all 21 if you want. The key is to start and come back to them whenever life gets in the way. Let's dive into these 21 tiny habits that can improve your life effortlessly.

1. Express Gratitude Daily

Write down three things you're grateful for every day. If that feels too much, start with just one. The goal is to always be looking for the positive, even on the worst days. This habit has been a consistent part of my life for the past two years, and it has helped me reframe bad days. When I struggle to find a positive aspect, I simply say I'm grateful to be alive and have a future full of possibilities.

2. Learn to Say No

If you accept everything coming your way, you'll never have time for yourself. Create that time by refusing whatever you're not excited about during the week. Start by refusing once and see how liberating it is. You can also set higher limits on the time you give to others, leaving some leeway for yourself. It may take some time for people to adapt to this change, but they will eventually accept it.

Examples:

  • Decline a meeting you consider pointless.
  • Tell one of three friends asking for help that they might need to find someone else.

3. Exercise for a Minute in the Morning

Even in your busy life, you can find the time for a one-minute exercise routine. I usually go for 30 push-ups and a minimum of 30 seconds of planking. Exercising first thing in the morning gets the blood flowing and helps you start the day with a sense of accomplishment.

4. Invest in Experiences

How often do you spend money on objects compared to experiences? What we remember isn't objects, but the experiences we've had. In 2023, I often met friends outside for walks or went on short trips, creating memories and bonding. In 2024, I plan to increase my investment in experiences even more.

5. Organize Your Home

Regardless of the size of your living space, you can easily reorganize your home. Set up different areas for different tasks, such as reading, working, meditating, sleeping, and gaming. This simple organization can make a significant difference in your daily life.

6. Declutter and Throw Things Away

If you've never consciously made an effort to throw something away that you've been keeping "just in case," try it today. It's a liberating experience. You might get a taste for it and keep doing it, or you might want to throw away 465 items like I did last November, following the Minimalism Game. Either way, there's a lot of clutter you can get rid of to create more space in your life.

7. Manage Your Finances

This is not about investing, but rather about knowing where your money is coming from and going to. You can set up a free app like Money Manager, enter your incomes and expenses, and then automate the regular ones. This simple habit will help you gain a clear understanding of your financial situation.

8. Stand Up Every Hour

This is one of the hardest habits for me, yet it's so simple and good for the body. We've spent so much time sitting for hours on end that it's become a deeply ingrained habit. Set reminders, or find ways to remember to stand up every hour, even if it's just for a minute. Your body will thank you in the long run.

9. Follow the Proverb "When We Have No Head, We Have Legs"

I live my life by this simple proverb, which means that when we can't control a situation, we should just move forward and do what needs to be done. It's a way to accept whatever happens and avoid getting angry or frustrated when you forget something or make a mistake. Instead of dwelling on it, just accept it and take the necessary steps to move forward.

10. Ask Open-Ended Questions

If you struggle with conversations, try asking open-ended questions as often as possible. Questions starting with "why," "where," "when," "who," "what," and "which" help keep the conversation going and make you a better interlocutor. People love talking about themselves, so this simple trick can significantly improve your communication skills.

11. Turn Off Notifications

Start by turning off notifications for an hour a day. This may seem harder than it is, but the only reason you're not doing it is that "being reachable" has become a habit. Erase those notifications for an hour, and you'll be able to accomplish a lot more. I've now got my notifications off for two-thirds of my day, and it's been a game-changer.

12. Prepare Your Clothes the Night Before

This simple habit can save you precious mental energy in the morning. Why waste time deciding what to wear when you can do it the night before? It doesn't create any havoc in your daily life, yet it helps you save your energy for what really matters.

13. Limit Your News Consumption

Chances are you already started doing this in 2023 to avoid the mess that year was. If not, start today. No matter how curious you are, you don't need to watch the news three times a day, let alone ten. If you can, only watch or read the news once, around midday. This way, you'll always be on track with what's happening in the world without feeling overwhelmed.

14. Drink More Water

Another simple tiny habit that's great for your health. You can get water almost anywhere, so there's no excuse not to drink more of it. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated throughout the day.

15. Discover One New Thing a Month

This is my favorite of the 21 habits. Drop all expectations and just discover something new each month. It could be diving into a topic you've been curious about, like the battle of Marignano or the culture of "Purikura." Discovering new things keeps us curious and slowly expands our skills and knowledge over time.

16. Make Your Bed

As Admiral William McRaven said in a speech, starting your day by making your bed can lead to a series of small wins. It's a simple habit that doesn't change your life right away, but it sets the tone for the rest of the day and can have a positive impact in the long run.

17. Spend a Minute a Day with Yourself

Take just one minute a day to be alone with your thoughts, without any distractions. Do this while on the toilet if need be. This simple practice of self-awareness can help you start being more mindful of your thoughts instead of being on autopilot.

18. Question the Worth of Your Actions

Many of the actions we take throughout the day aren't worth our time. Ask yourself, "If I had two months left to live, would I be doing this?" This simple question can help you prioritize your time and focus on what truly matters.

19. Do Tasks Under 2 Minutes Immediately

Instead of the common advice of doing tasks under 5 minutes immediately, I prefer a 2-minute limit. If a task takes 5 minutes, write it down and do it within the next hour and a half. This gives you some leeway while still preventing procrastination.

20. Maintain Good Posture

Poor posture can have many long-term repercussions on your health. If you already have a hunched back, make a conscious effort to sit up straight whenever you remember. If you have good posture, treasure it and notice when it's not the case. Hang reminders around to help you maintain proper alignment.

21. Read for 15 Minutes a Day

As Jim Kwik says, "Leaders are readers." Reading for 15 minutes a day, whether fiction or non-fiction, can have a significant impact on your personal growth and development. If you can't find 15 minutes each day, aim for 1 hour and 45 minutes per week. It's a small start, but it's more than what most people do.

All these tiny habits may seem insignificant, but their impact can be life-changing in the long run. The key is to stick with them, even when the results aren't immediately visible. 2024 can be the year you start improving your life one small step at a time. So go ahead, stand up, and throw something away to get started.
